ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Assistive technology can sometimes be the key to a loved one's independence, self-confidence and overall happiness. Assistive Technology is any device, resource or service, which aids the patient to improve any skill, which is hindering his/her functional ability. These devices may vary from a simple hearing aid, to a more high tech augmentative communication board as used in speech therapy.
AUGMENTATIVE TECHNOLOGY
Augmentative Technology Devices are designed to aid persons who have lost some of their ability to speak. There are a variety of products that are available that range from simple books to more complicated communication boards. Communication boards are specifically tailored for each person. These boards provide the user with the ability to communicate their needs by pressing picture buttons. Due to the highly specialized nature of this technology, a speech therapist can even program the native language into the board. This type of technology can bridge communication between caregivers and patients.
RECREATION
There is a lot to be said for play and recreation. For people with head injury, skills are sometimes relearned through play and recreational activities. People relearn social skills necessary to live productive and social lives. Play and recreation challenges can help an individual to feel comfortable once again in a social setting. We must however, have the appropriate assistive technology devices for those with disabilities to make this task fun. Some of these devices may include enhancing the original structure of the toy to make it accessible to all. This can be accomplished, for example, by building blocks on peddles of a bike or changing the handle bars, even to motorize a bike so that the experience of riding one will not be lost. Another way to have people experience play and recreation is by adapting some cognitive toys and games by making them larger and stable. This will help to facilitate independent play.
MOBILITY DEVICES
As caregivers we are always looking to enhance the lives of those who are in our care. If we can provide the necessary equipment to make the patient more mobile, we can therefore increasing his/her desire to interact with others and become more independent. There are a variety of aides and devices to assist these individuals. Some of which include chair lifts, ramps, walkers, crutches, battery powered as well as manual wheelchairs to name a few.
